One of America's finest social historians of his day, Allan Nevins, finds a congenial subject in this first complete biography of the wild and wonderful evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson and her yeasty mother, Minnie Kennedy. Aimee was a rising evangelist in the tent circuit of the Atlantic seaboard when she, her mother her two young children set out by automobile for Los Angeles in 1918. Four years later, they opened the 5000-seat Angelus Temple that would Aimee's base of power until her death in 1944. McPherson discovered her own brand of dramatic, triumphant preaching, was renowned around the country, and established the Church of the Foursquare Gospel. But her vivid personal life--three marriages, family dissentions, church uproars, breakdowns, world tours, court battles---also electrified the public.
