Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Contemporary half maroquin with gilt quarters on spine and gilt edges. One frontispiece (with tissue) and 23 fullpage illustrations(with tissues) and several small illustrations throughout the text. Illustrators: Édouard Riou and Henri de Montaut.
Book is in very good condition with a little bumping to the corners and little rubbing to the edges of the boards and the spine. Front free endpaper has been torn in the middle. The pages are bright and clean but some have little foxing.This is an extremly attractive and scarce edition of Jules Verne's first book.
