Textblock edges lightly soiled, owners name (John Hope Franklin) written in a few vols., a small number of lightly bumped corners, otherwise clean / unmarked. The dj's are now protected in mylar sleeves. **** Previos owner of this set was African American author and historian. Franklin is best known for his book, FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDON (1947). He was also President of both the American Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association.

Bound in publisher's plum-colored cloth with gilt spine lettering. Near Fine with faint rubbing at the tips, in a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with minor shelf wear. This edition preceded the much more common American edition; quite scarce signed.

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) Revelation was written at the height of Christians prosecution by the Romans and the book as inspired many past literary masterpieces by the likes of Dante and Milton. For this edition the great American artist Allan Rohan Crite was inspired to produce fifteen relief engravings for possibly the ultimate illustrated edition of the book of Revelations. Revelations passionately speak against the power of evil and encourage Christians to resist even at the cost of martyrdom. Many critics considers this to be Crite's finest religious work. One volume (16 x 22 inches) Relief engravings were printed on Japanese paper and mounted on heavy paper handmade in Pescia Italy. A symbolically complex novel whose parallel narratives deal with intertwined themes of (bureaucratic) order and (natural) chaos on an alien world dominated by a seemingly endless forest. In an essay included as afterword to the 2018 translation published by University of Chicago Press, Boris Strugatsky acknowledged this as the brothers' "most complete and important work." Nonetheless, the work had a troubled early history, with its suggestive ambiguities earning the ire of censors in Russia, where for decades it could only be found in heavily expurgated forms. This First Printing is in very good condition with a former owner's bookplate on the front endsheet. The dustjacket is in good condition with some slight edge chipping and the price clipped from the upper inside corner. The book is autographed by Frank Herbert on the title page. This book will make an excellent addition to the library of the serious collector of fine and rare books.
