William Pickering. London. 1849. FIRST PICKERING EDITION. 8vo. (9 x 6 inches). xii, 354pp. A very good copy in an attractive contemporary leather binding by J. Wright of London. Full black morocco. Spine with raised bands, each ruled in gilt. Compartments double ruled, fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Elaborate gilt panelled decoration on boards. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Neat previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. A neat professional repair to the binding hinges but overall a lovely copy.
Synopsis
The Pilgrim’s Progress From This World, To That Which Is To Come, written by writer and preacher John Bunyan while in prison, is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. In the Christian allegory, the characters function as embodiments of the moral qualities in their names: Christian, Christiana, Great-heart, and Hopeful, to name a few.
