Moldavia (later RMS & HMS Moldavia) was a British passenger steamship of the early 20th century. She served as the Royal Navy armed merchant cruiser HMS Moldavia during World War I until sunk by an Imperial German Navy submarine in 1918. Moldavia was built by Caird & Company of Greenock, Scotland for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P. & O. S. N. C .) in Yard No. 301. She was launched on March 28, 1903. The ship was completed on July 30, 1903. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company operated Moldavia on the England—Australia route via the Suez Canal. The British Admiralty purchased Moldavia on November 27, 1915 for Royal Navy service during World War I, when she was converted into an armed merchant cruiser and fitted with guns before she was commissioned as HMS Moldavia. Moldavia served on the Northern patrol as part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron, intercepting and examining merchant vessels in the North Atlantic. Moldavia was later serving as a troopship and was carrying U.S. troops when she was sunk on 23 May 1918 off Beachy Head in the English Channel, by a single torpedo from the German Type UB III submarine SM UB-57. Her sinking resulted in the deaths of 54 U.S. soldiers on board, and one death further at Western Heights Military Hospital Dover two days later.

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
