London: Printed for A. Strahan, and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, (Successors to Mr. Cadell,) in the Strand,, 1796. Two volumes, a third volume was published separately in 1815 by John Murray (not included). xxv, (1, errata), 703, viii, 726, (1 errata, ads verso) pages. Bound in contemporsry half mottled calf over marbled boards, marbled end papers, the armorial bookplates of Moncure Biddle front paste downs. Very Good, Vol. I missing volume label, Vol. II missing title label, bookplate in Vol. II partially removed, wear at joints and spine ends. With one sheet handwritten partial translation from French to English of Gibbon's letter to Mons. Deverdun dated 20 May 1783 laid in at p. 570 Vol. I, where the letter is printed in French. No attribution to the letter, although given the provenance of the Moncure Biddle bookplate, likely in the hand of John Lord Sheffield. Investment banker Moncure Biddle was.a famous bibliophile and connoisseur of editions of the classics. The translation is in handwritten ink, on paper similar to the paper used In the book, and has many corrections. A quite intriguing addition indeed. . First Edition. Half Mottled Calf. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Description:
LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general… Read More

London: printed by T Bensley; and sold by Thomas Egerton; and William Laing Edinburgh, 1795. Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Inscribed By the Editor. First Edition - First Printing. The Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland is a history of Scotland from the beginning of the world until the accession of King James I. Wyntoun wrote in eight syllable verse and couplets to form a primitive poetry. Composed of 30,000 verses the Cronykil is divided into nine books, and each book is divided into chapters. The first five books focus on the creation of the world in general, and Scottish history commences in the sixth. The eighth book is longer than the first four combined. Bound in peroid calf with gilt decroation. The books hinges are starting and the corners are bumped. The inscription reads "The editor of Wyntoun's Cronykil begs M Tytler"s acceptance of this copy as a mark of his respect and gratitude for the great care and attention bestowed by him in furnishing collations which were of very great… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape… Read More

Description:
New York: George H. Doran Company, 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. The U.S. first edition was made from British first edition sheets bound in a plain coarse dark red cloth with the same gilt titles on the spine as used on the British. Unlike its British counterpart, the sheets were left untrimmed on the fore and bottom edges and were bound without the Hodder and… Read More
