About This Item

London: Printed for W. Ginger, 1772. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto, 11 x 9 inches, original cream paper spine, drab gray-green boards, uncut, very good, light general rubbing, soil and darkening to binding, old homemade label on spine, contents very good, light foxing, very wide margined, has bookplate of Robert Henry Lee Warner (of Tyberton in Herefordshire) on pastedown and ownership signature of a W. S. T. Brydges from 1789 on flyleaf. XVI, 352 pp., with lengthy subscribers list. One of the best Latin poets of his time, admired by Cowper and Lamb. The Latin verse in this volume, which came out posthumously (Bourne died in 1747), also contain English facing versions. He is well thought of for his verbal acuity and dexterity, composing Latin verse that contains magic lantern shows, spectacles, and other modernities that test the edges of Latin. Unusual to find this in the original boards. This edition contained poems that others had attributed to Bourne but turned out not to be his work, a rare case of a posthumous act of plagiarism?
