About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Presentation copy, with a special bookplate inscribed by Charles Scribner III to noted collector C.D. Raymond affixed to the front pastedown. Additionally inscribed by legendary editor Maxwell Perkins and Carroll Merritt, head of the Scribner book subscription department.

Centennial history of the American publisher founded in 1846 at the Brick Church Chapel on New York's Park Row. The firm enjoyed considerable success during the interwar period, thanks in no small part to Maxwell Perkins (1884-1947), who discovered and mentored authors Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Thomas Wolfe, among others.

Octavo: xii, [4], 347 p. Original brown cloth binding, with gilt titles. Light wear to the corners and tips; else near fine.
