Curtis was a proponent of quality and civil rights for African Americans, the American Transcendentalist movement, and Utopian communities (he joined Brook Farm in 1842). His family was friendly with Emerson, Hawthorne, and Thoreau, and active in the Underground Railroad. He is also a 2011 graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS).
