About This Item
First Edition. Very Good. Signed by Rachel Maxwell, daughter of the subject and the author. The late Brig. Gen. Francis Aylmer Maxwell served in the Boer War and World War I. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in the Boer War. He was killed in battle in WW I. The book is a compilation of correspondence and diaries carried out by his widow, Charlotte Maxwell, for her grandchildren. The book is inscribed "This was my mother's labor of love just before she died ...". It is signed Rachel, who is the daughter of Charlotte and Gen. Maxwell. It is warmly inscribed to Margaret, who was Margaret McDermott of Dallas, Texas. The book was purchased from the McDermott estate. Margaret and Eugene McDermott were very important people in the history of Dallas. They were major philanthropists in the arts, sciences, education and just about everything else. The late Margaret McDermott was the grande dame of Arts philanthropy in Dallas. The cover has a little damage at the top front edge, There is light foxing on the leading edge. Some of the plates are stuck together, mostly at the leading edge. The top of the page edge is blue. The pages are lightly, but evenly toned, but otherwise clean and unmarked. There is a thin clear dust jacket which is in tatters, but still in one piece. Other than the clear dust jacket, there is no other jacket, but I don't think it was issued with one. Book is listed as very good. Rachel has inscribed and signed on the front free end page.
