Description:
Black Beauty is an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she remained in her house as an invalid. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but having lived long enough to see her only novel become a success. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. While forthrightly teaching animal welfare, it also teaches how to treat people with kindness, sympathy, and respect. Throughout, Sewell rails - in a gentle, 19th-century way - against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all.

1573 Ragione d'Alcune Cose Castelvetro on Annibal Caro Poetry Italian Language

Lodovico Castelvetro was a 16th-century Italian scholar who was notable for his commentary, notes, and criticisms of other authors. His commentary on Aristotle was his most famous work; however, he was highly critical of fellow Italian writer Annibal Caro. In his work 'Regione d'Alcune Cose', Castelvetro discussed the language that Caro used in his poems, criticisms that sparred debates between the two scholars.

Uppsala: Almqvist & Wiksells, 1949. Large octavo, pp 338, a very occasional light and discrete pencil note in a margin, otherwise incredibly clean internally, paperback, the covers in very good condition. RARE - a fine copy. [Macer Floridus is the alleged pseudonym of Odo de Meung, a French cleric and physician who lived during the 11th century and was the presumed author of the herbal poem De Viribus Herbarum (On the properties of plants). The use of "Macer" alludes to the Roman poet, Aemilius Macer (16 B.C.), who authored a poem on remedies for those afflicted with wounds from poisonous serpents. The herbal, commonly referred to as the Macer Floridus, was written in Latin hexameter verse and presented the medicinal uses of plants. The rhyming verse aided doctors and apothecaries in memorizing medicinal recipes and treatments, which made the herbal popular among those who practiced medicine during the Middle Ages. The Macer Floridus is recognized as a signal of revival in botanical… Read More

Description:
This rare and stunning 1910 edition tells the true (though exaggerated) story of Miyamoto, Japan's most famous sword expert, philosopher and ronin. It features two maps and several beautiful illustrations, some of which are in color. It is in good condition save for a water spot on the top of the spine of Volume II. The tissue paper used to cover and protect the colored illustrations is intact, but spotted. At some point in its life, a bookseller placed a sticker over the "Published by Author - Yokohama" text on the title pages of both volumes. See photos. Otherwise, these volumes have aged extremely well. This book was self-published by the author as a small collection and is exceedingly rare and would make a proud addition to collectors specializing in world history, Japan, samurai, Eastern philosophy or rare books.
