About This Item
New York: Covici, Friede. Good+. 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . (blue cloth; no dust jacket) [decent reading/reference copy, front hinge a little weak but still holding (not split), internally quite clean; spine cloth faded and somewhat mottled]. (B&W photographs) One of the earliest historical examinations of the movies as an industry, written by an insider: the author, after stints in advertising, publishing and as a tobacco company executive, entered the film business in 1916 and worked for a number of production/distribution companies, including the General Film Company and Samuel Goldwyn. Although the 1970 Dover reprint (retitled "History of the American Film Industry, from its beginnings to 1931") is fairly common, the first edition is harder to find, and the reproduction of the 125 photographs (collected in a special section at the rear of the book) is markedly superior than in the reprint. .
