Scribe from the Scrub
Keith Garvey was born at Frog Hollow, Moree, the youngest son of an Irish-born grazier. His mother was a bullock-driver's daughter of convict stock. When he was seven the family moved to the small village of Pallamallawa, where he has lived ever since. He has been a shearer, drover, bush-worker, horse-trainer, bookmaker, cattle-dealer and horse breaker. Always a keen reader, his heroes were "Banjo" Paterson and Henry Lawson, the latter who he describes as "the Messiah of the working classes, whose pen spoke for the underdog always". Dick Welsh, a young talent scout for the A.B.C. Radio advised him to write about the outback he knows so well. His tall stories are well known on the country A.B.C. programme, Australia All Over, and are soon to be published in a book titled "My Uncle Harry", followed by "Shout For The Adder", in which characters contained in "The Funny Bugger" are again presented.
