About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1964 First edition, first impression. Jonathan Cape, London 1964. Jacket design by Raymond Hawkey.
Len Deighton's third thriller: 'The classic and gripping spy novel of Cold War Berlin' (Guardian) 1963 Berlin is dark and dangerous. The anonymous hero of The 'IPCRESS File' and 'Horse Under Water' has been sent to help arrange the defection - in an elaborate mock coffin - of a leading Soviet scientist. But, as he soon discovers, this deception hides an even deadlier truth. One of the first novels written after the construction of the Berlin Wall, Funeral in Berlin revels in the murky, chilling atmosphere of a divided city.
Book is near fine except partially light spotting to edges. Otherwise crisp and clean with black boards with gilt lettering on spine and images of a black stamp and a blind imprint stamped on front cover. With pictorial table print on the endpapers.
Dust jacket is near fine with some miniscule edgewear. Unclipped and correct priced (18s. net). Small tear on the bottom of the front flap. Now preserved in a transparent Mylar sleeve.
Synopsis
Funeral in Berlin is a spy novel by Len Deighton. The subject of the novel — arranging a Soviet scientist's defection — is dated, but the characters (especially Johnny Vulkan and Colonel Stok) remain memorable. Another controversial character is the civil servant Hallam, who is shown to be susceptible to blackmail because he is homosexual; male homosexuality remained illegal in England until 1967.
