The classic exegesis of Dante's works, with particular focus on the role and meanings of Beatrice in Dante's life and writings. Williams saw Dante's Beatrice as an example of the "affirmation of images" in Christina theology, in which mundane objects and people reflect, or embody, or lead us to something greater - ultimately to the Divine. Williams was a playwright, novelist, poet, theologian and critic. He was also a member, with CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, of the Oxford literary group The Inklings. It is generally acknowledged that Dorothy Sayers' translation of Dante was inspired by reading Williams' Figure of Beatrice.
