About This Item
1629 Epistolae of Saint Boniface Patron of Germania English Monks Popes Serarius
Saint Boniface was an 8th-century English Benedictine monk and was one of the most important figures in the establishing of the church in Germany. Becoming known as the patron saint of Germania, Boniface wrote countless letters of correspondence with popes, bishops, and preachers discussing church reforms, doctrines, and relationships of churches. These letters were published by numerous editors in the 17th and 18th-centuries, but perhaps none as are desirable as that of Nicolaus Serarius.
This impressive 1629 printing of Serarius's edition of Boniface's "Epistolae" was published in Mainz and is notable for its illustrated title page, engraved with 12 small, engraved scenes depicting the character of Saint Boniface.
