About This Item
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1987. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Hardcover : [xii], 447p : black cloth-backed boards, pink lettering to spine : unclipped dust wrapper. Stead's last published novel appearing after her death in 1983. Set in the States, the work spans three decades from the 1930s to 1950s during the time of the McCarthy hearings and the work, not surprisingly, is the most political of her novels. Stead started the novel in the 1940s while living in America and completed it in 1966 although she was encouraged to rework it which she did over the next 10 or so years. R. G. Geering, Stead's literary executor, who also produced a number of biographical and critical studies of the author, revised the work for publication.
