This is a Fine, crisp unread copy in a Near Fine, bright dust jacket with a tiny closed edge tear to the bottom of the front panel and a touch of wear to the head of the spine. Otherwise a brilliant copy of Thompson's first book. The boards are perfectly square, the stamping on the spine spectacular and the black top stain is perfect.

Spine with five raised bands, compartments lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt. Red title label, gilt. Single gilt ruled border to boards. Top edge gilt. A Fine copy of Bowles' influential first novel. Famously rejected by his American publishers, the London edition of The Sheltering Sky is the true first edition.

New York: Dodd, Mead, 1934. First edition. 273 pp. Full lavender cloth, lettered and decorated in black, with the dust jacket. Top edge spotted, head and tail of spine a bit discolored. The jacket has an inch chip on the top edge of the front panel, affecting the title lettering, and some minor chipping at the tail of the spine, front flap almost detached but holding. Fast's second book, which he later disowned as a "half-assed, hysterical novel." Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "to ---- / Merry Christmas / Happy New Year / 1944-1945 / Howard." Scarce in any format, especially in jacket and inscribed.

London; (1967): Calder & Boyars. First Edition. Octavo. 168 pages. limited to 100 signed copies, the present copy is B-30 signed by the author. These pieces were ignored by critics of the era but now are considered distillations of his major thinking. For example, Ping existence of two very different kinds of literary politics. "Ping" is one of Beckett's "residua" texts from No's Knife, in this collection we have much on the battle between postmodern exhaustion and modernist epiphany. Bound in 1/4 pale green buckram lettered in gilt, backed in white calf lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, near fine in near fine publisher's cloth covered slipcase. Very nice.

NY: Knopf, 1965. First edition, first prnt. Signed by Tyler on the title page. Laid in is a typed note with ink signature on 6x7 inch 20lb stock. "Louise: here is a peculiar little book which I was suppose (sic) to review but couldn't think of anything to say about -- which is not to say I didn't like it. But it left me baffled. See what you think. It's coming out this month. Behave yourself. Either get rid of the whiskey or the scatter rugs. I know what I'd do. Love, (indecipherable first name signature - could be "Helen")." The front board has a faint rust mark left by a paperclip; otherwise it is an exceptionally clean, tight copy; the dustjacket has the upper corners just touched, mildly sunned spine and a shallow paperclip impression on the front panel upper edge - see scan. Report includes an account of the obstacles to its founding and events at its first meeting, at which William Lloyd Garrison was arrested. Also containing a letter from Lydia Maria Child. At the conclusion are several poems and hymns, including ones by Chapman and Bernard Barton. Maria Weston Chapman was a founding member of the Society, and was closely associated with Lucretia Mott, Lydia Maria Child and the New England abolitionists. Wrappers a little worn and beginning to separate at the spine; o/w Very Nice.
