About This Item

1735 Builder's Dictionary ARTS Drawing Glass Making Architecture Painting Barrow

John Barrow was an 18th-century English historian remembered for his illustrated dictionaries. While he was perhaps better known for his naval and geographical dictionaries, his 'Builder's Dictionary' might be his best! This work was written as an architect and art-worker's companion contains instruction and aids on drawing and painting, production of dyes and colors, glass and marble making, cloth bleaching, tapestry weaving, making inks, and sculpting and engraving. One particularly interesting chapter found in this volume is "an explanation of the hieroglyphical representations of heathen deities…in painting". Note the impressive illustrations throughout this book.
