Bound in contemporary half brown leather with marbled paper boards, morocco labels with gilt lettering to spines. Some rubbing to boards and bumping to corners. Ex-library, with stamp and call number to the front free endpapers, worn call numbers to tails of spines. Ink name stamp to front pastedowns. Light scattered foxing. Both volumes with one leaf of ads in rear. With hand-colored fold-out map in volume 2. Small tape repair to map. CC consignment. Shelved in Case 3. Translation of de Tocqueville's 'De la d'émocratie en Amérique.' This Edition is both the First English Language Edition and the First British Edition. It was first published in French in Paris earlier in 1835, though it would not be published in America until 1838.

Synopsis
De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the democratic institution of the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America.
