Synopsis
Phillis Wheatley (1753 – 1784) was the first African-American woman in United States' history to have her poetry published. Wheatly was enslaved at the age of eight and given an education in the home of her owners. Her poetic works were respected in the realm of literature and impressed in her time all who didn't believe a young girl could produce such works.
