A grande obra-prima e última ópera de Georges Bizet (Paris, 1838 Bougival, 1875), Carmen, em quatro atos, com libreto de Henri Meilhac e Ludovic Halévy, baseado no romance homónimo de Prosper Mérimée, estreou em 1875, no Opéra-Comique de Paris. Retrata uma cigana femme fatale que preza a liberdade acima de tudo e para quem o amor é como um pássaro selvagem, que não pode ser aprisionado.
