Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. [From About this Book on page 3] Although the first English Edition was published in 1950, and sold at what now seems the incredible price of 6d (Six Old Pence == 2.5 p), its origin was 20 years earlier in pre-Hitler Germany, where the Author was teaching English in a girls' school, and was asked to give a talk on "The English University of Cambridge" to some students at München. The notes for this lecture (in German) which still exist were used as the framework, and although many changes have been made in subsequent editions, much of the original writing still survives. Now, three years after her death, this 6th Edition is presented in a form which readers should find not only right up to date, but still a recognisable successor to the original. Reference has been included to two major historical discoveries which have shed new light on the earliest days of the University â the finding of a copy of the Statutes of 1250 in a Rome Library by Dr. Benedict Hackett, and the translation and assessment of the Account Books and Diaries of King's Hall by Professor Cobban. Some notes on the latter will be found in the section on Trinity College.
