From the dustjacket: "The strange story of a handful of young men who took up land on beautiful Tillamook Bay in Oregon in the 1850s -- defiant dreamers battling the wilderness. With the forested mountains at their backs and the open sea their sole rod to trade, they were suddenly isolated from the outside world: the only captain would would enter their harbor, once a year, had died; and so, it seemed, would their new settlement. They decided to build their own schooner. "
