About This Item
London: The British Library, 1984 4to (28.5 cm), front. printed in color, XII, 407 pp. Publisher's brown cloth, housed in a slipcase. T.J. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922) was a dynamic organizer and effective publicist of the Arts and Crafts Movement, a term he coined. Among all the arts and crafts, he was most engaged in those associated with his vision of the Book Beautiful: calligraphy, typography, and bookbinding. He completed his first binding on 21 July 1884, a work heralded by G. D. Hobson as the first modern binding. To commemorate the 100th anniversary, the British Library published Cobden-Sanderson's Time Book, in which he meticulously recorded details of his bindings created from 1884 to 1893, before he established the Doves Bindery. Of the total 169 bindings, over half have been located, examined, and photographed. The catalog is prefaced by a biographical introduction. The appendixes include Cobden-Sanderson's designs unrelated to bindings, a list of his tools and tool designs, and a catalog of major exhibitions featuring Cobden-Sanderson bindings.
