About This Item

Garden City: The Crime Club by Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1941. First Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. Good/Good-. 8vo. Pp. [1], 2-278. Bound in teal cloth with black lettering stamped on front board and spine. Two small white spots on front board, spine a tad creased and cocked. Offsetting to pastedowns. Top edge dyed pink. In the illustrated dust jacket that has 50-cent piece size chip at top right front panel, edge-wear, rubbing and loss; spine faded. Price of $2.00 intact on the front flap, beneath decal shadow. The cool, uncredited dust jacket illustration depicts an eerie tableau in black, midnight blue and pink.

Australian sisters Constance and Gwenyth Little had a lengthy run as mystery writers, writing most novels in their adopted home of Newton, NJ. Other than their debut novel (1938), the sisters used the word "Black" in all titles. (Their English publisher employed the pen-name portmanteau "Conyth.") Unlike many mystery novels of Golden Age Detection, their sleuths, whether a ballerina, a nurse, an heiresses, et al., are always female; the male protagonists serve as mere foils. Moreover, wacky, screwball plot flourishes prevail: "homicide and humor," as the publisher promises.HUBIN, p. 258.

A presentable copy, with dust jacket now housed in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
