About This Item

Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, 1980. Reprint. Cloth. VG/Good. Buxton, Ian : Big Gun Monitors: The History of the Design, Construction and Operation of the Royal Navy's Monitors. Annapolis : Naval Institute Press, 1980. Reprint. Size is quarto (4vo), 10.5"/26.5cm h. Bound in publisher's rusty red  cloth, silver lettering to spine. Glossy color photographic dust jacket. Plain white endpapers. [1-4], 5-215, [216] blank. Abbrev, preface, origins, chaps on monitors by big gun size (14 inch, 12 inch, 15 inch), ex-Brazilian river monitors, ex-Norwegian coastal defense bbs, both WWs. Notes, bibliography, index. Replete with b&w photos, drawings, charts/specs. Condition notes: A well-loved but solid copy: dustjacket shows several small tears, tape repairs, staining; flaps have been neatly taped to both pastedowns. Interior shows several scattered stains, no markups. A fascinating and thorough study of a little-known side of the Dreadnaught-era naval history. We personally inspect every book we offer.

About Furrowed Brow Books

Furrowed Brow Books offers an eclectic selection mostly in the humanities, while providing specialty offerings in Eastern Orthodoxy and Byzantine civilization, theology, Christian mysticism, science fiction/fantasy (Tolkien and Inklings emphasis), and military history (esp American Civil War).

Furrowed Brow Books was established in 2020. The bookstore's owner, Paul Purman, grew up in a magical, historic farmhouse in piedmont Maryland stuffed with books. In 2021 Paul was accepted as a member of the Independent Online Booksellers' Association (IOBA), and graduated from the annual Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS-Minnesota).
