He saw action in the American Revolution as well as the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. During the American War for Independence, his first command was on the sloop HMS Snake and then the 24 gun HMS Hind. In 1782 he took command of the 32 gun HMS Ambuscade and remained there until the end of the war. After the surrender he was given command of the HMS Perseverance (1787). He was made Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom in 1819 after the death of Sir William Cornwallis, but he was already in failing health and died a couple of years later. A lovely set in original bindings and with interesting and topical provenance.
