About This Item
Minneapolis and New York: Minneapolis Institute of Arts; W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1996. 204 pages, illustrations; 27 cm. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, July 17 to October 10, 1993. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Front cover slightly sunned. Stated First Edition. "Camera Notes was the most significant American photographic periodical of its time. Published quarterly by the Camera Club of New York and edited by Alfred Stieglitz, the fountainhead of American Art Photography, it represented a critical phase in the campaign to legitimize the photo image as an artistic pursuit. Throughout most of its six-year life (1897-1903) the publication included thoughtful articles on photography as fine art as well as hundreds of halftone images and stunning high-quality photogravures. While much has been written on Stieglitz's life and many endeavors, including his later publication Camera Work, little attention has been given to Camera Notes. This striking volume details the history of Camera Notes and its influence on the photographic world. It reproduces in their original tones all 91 of the beautiful photogravures that appeared during the journal's life. In addition, it contains a fully illustrated index of the more than 250 halftones that appeared on its pages." - Publisher.. 1st. Paperback. Very Good. 4to.
