Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1966. First Edition. Archive of material belonging to screenwriter Mann Rubin from the 1968 film. Included in the archive are one Treatment script dated June 4, 1964, two Treatment scripts dated 2/23/65, one Treatment script dated March 19, 1965, one Draft script dated October 1, 1965, and one Final script dated March 1, 1966. 1965.

Additionally included in the archive is Rubin's copy of Norman Mailer's source novel, with a Warner Brothers Story Department stamp on the front endpaper, and holograph ink and pencil annotations throughout, along with four photographic poster proofs, and a synopsis and cast list.

Three scripts with Rubin's holograph ink and pencil annotations noting substantive revisions. Laid in with Rubin's copy of Mailer's novel is a copy of a typed three-page interdepartmental note from producer Stan Margulies to Warner Brothers screenwriter Curtis Kenyon, dated July 15, 1965, discussing the script.

Based on Norman Mailer's 1965 novel, about a war veteran and talk show host who is suspected of killing his wife, and is pursued by both the police and a gang of criminals.

Brooklyn-born screenwriter Mann Rubin was best known as a writer for television, penning episodes of many successful television series for over five decades, including "Dynasty," "The Mod Squad," "The Fugitive," "Mission Impossible," "Perry Mason," and "Starsky and Hutch." Rubin additionally co-wrote Jean Negulesco's 1959 film "The Best of Everything," as well as adapting the 1980 film "The First Deadly Sin," starring Frank Sinatra and Faye Dunaway.

Self wrappers. Title page integral with the first page of text, dated 6/4/64, stamped Warner Brothers Pictures Inc. Story Dept., with credits for "Analyst" Steve Goodman. 19 leaves, with last page of text numbered 19. Mimeograph duplication on eye-rest green stock, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, partially bound with a single staple to the top left corner.

Treatment script dated 2/23/65:

Self wrappers. Lacking title page, presumably as issued. Pages dated 2/23/65 throughout. 60 leaves, with last page of text numbered 60. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock, rectos only. Pages Very Good plus, partially bound with a single gold brad to the top left corner.

Annotated Treatment script dated 2/23/65:

Blue titled wrappers, noted as TREATMENT on the front wrapper, dated March 19, 1965, with credits for screenwriter Mann Rubin. Title page present, dated March 19, 1965, with credits for screenwriter Mann Rubin. 73 leaves, with last page of text numbered 71. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock, rectos only. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with two gold brads.

Draft script dated 10/1/1965:

Orange untitled wrappers. Title page present, dated Oct. 1, 1965, with credits for screenwriter Mann Rubin, novelist Norman Mailer, and producer Stan Margulies. 149 leaves, with last page of text numbered 143. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound internally with three gold brads.

Final script:

Goldenrod titled Warner Brothers wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 13 , dated March 1, 1966. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, dated 3/1/66, with credits for screenwriter Mann Rubin, novelist Norman Mailer, and producer Stan Margulies. 131 leaves, with last page of text numbered 127. Xerographic duplication on eye-rest green stock, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound internally with two gold brads.
