Bateman was a thief, fortuneteller, healer, murder and even a follower of Joanna Southcott. As a follower of Southcott she swindled people by convincing them that the eggs she exhibited for a penny had messages on them about the second coming of Christ. She was eventually hung after being convicted of murder.
