Seldom-seen but interesting thesis on the metabolism of algae, and the effect upon coral reefs. The (im)ballance of coralline ecosystems, and the influence of algae, is an issue currently of great interest in relation to the upwarming of the oceans. A very good, clean copy.

This very large publication offers the first complete guide to the ferns, fern related, and seed-bearing plants of Washington, northern Oregon, the western part of Montana an southern British Columbia (Canada). Published in reversed chronology: Volume 1 (1969) deals with cryptogams, gymnosperms, and monocotyledons, volume 2 (1964) with Salicaceae to Saifragaceae, volume 3 (1961) with Saxifragacae to Ericaceae, volume 4 (1959) Ericaceae through Campanulaceae, and volume 5 (1955) with Compositae. Very well-illustrated. Volumes 3-5 in their original dust jackets, which are a bit chipped at the edges. Original red quarter calf over red, gilt and black embossed pictorial boards. Marbled edges [to volume 2]. Rare first (Swedish) edition of this famous voyage round Asia and Arctic Europe and of the first succesful scientific voyage through the polar regions of Siberia with the famous map called "Karta öfver Gamla verldens Nordkust frän Norge till Beringssund med Vega-expeditionenskurs" by N. Selander. Some pages have a small waterstain at the inner margin. The first German edition was from 1882 and first English edition was published not until 1885. The cruises of the Vema yielded many Brachiopoda from the nortwestern Atlantic, Caribbean, tropical Eastern Pacific and the waters around southern Argentina and Chile, and off South Africa. Cooper describes several new species and lists others in open nomenclature. Well illustrated. This is Smithsonian contributions to Paleobiology 17. A very good clean copy.

[Antwerpen,] Philip Galle, [ca. 1600]. Oblong folio (27.4 x 35.5 cm). Engraved allegorical titlepage; 21 engraved plates with engraved captions. Near contemporary blind quarter vellum over marbled boards. A rare, unusually wide-margined copy; in fact, possibly the widest margins ever recorded. The amazingly detailed engravings depict fierce battles between men and "beasts", including elephants, lions, leopards, bears, wild oxen, crocodiles, etc. Some scenes are hunting scenes, one shows a Roman circus, with gladiators, three others feature large dragons. A few show bird-catching. The fine, lively scenes were engraved by Jan Collaert I (ca. 1530-1581), Karel van Mallery (1571-1635), and Cornelis Galle I (1576-1650), all after original drawings by Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus (1523-1605). Second, enlarged, and definitive edition of this fine French game book, first published in 1763. With its very expressive woodcuts of game animals, including a hare, a squirrel, a deer, a fallow deer, a wild boar, a wolf, a fox, a badger and an otter. It includes drawings of footprints, and musical scores. Page numbers 447-448 were not used, as is clear from the index. Some rubbing to the boards, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Title page, 460 pp.; three large, multi-folded maps of the earth, relating to areas where useful observations could be made, and two (one large, folded) plates with observation instruments. Contemporary mottled boards. Printed label on the spine. This volume contains all the papers related to the then-approaching Venus transit of 1874, and the preparations for successful observations. It is much rarer than any of the "results" papers, published after the transit. Originally, four sets of publications were planned, namely: 1. Summaries of the records of the committees dealing with the project; 2. Documents related to the mission, and papers on preparation of the mission; 3. Reports of the observations, and 4. Discussion of the results. Contemporary pebbled half calf over pebbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title (of the Journal). An important work on the marine Neogene molluscs of Sumatra (Indonesia) by the British malacologist Henry Woodward (1832-1921). Many of the well-preserved and well-illustrated specimens represent species described as new by Woodward, and still valid today. The paper, in four parts, was "published with the authority and assistance of the Dutch-Indian Government". This is the complete issue of the Geological Magazine for 1879, with many other palaeontological contributions. Boards and spine rubbed; stamps on title and plate versos (not shining through), otherwise very good. Rare.

Mounted on a larger sheet of grey paper (32.4 x 25.0 cm). A beautiful original illustration by the French engineer, ornithologist, and natural history painter Paul Louis Ernest Adrien Barruel (1901-1982). It is the original artwork for the front board of a French book entitled Carnets Secrets d'un Ornithologue, by Jiguet and Etchecopar, as well as for a Japanese translation of this book. While Barruel was being trained as an engineer, observation of nature became his passion and, in the 1930s, he filled sketchbooks with animals and plants out of desire to find the names of all species he encountered. He publishes his first note on ornithology in 1934. From then on, he travelled across France and abroad to observe and illustrate birds and other wildlife. Interesting essay on the most important and oldest still existing scientific society in Germany. It published the famous Miscellanea Curiosa, Acta and Nova Acta Leopoldina. The Leopoldina was founded in the city of Schweinfurt on 1 January 1652 under the Latin name Academia Naturae Curiosorum, and currently it is the German Academy of Sciences. The German botanist, mycologist, zoologist and physician Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858) was president of the society for 40 years, from 1818 until his death. Nees von Esenbeck "was a contemporary of Goethe and was born within the lifetime of Linnaeus. He described approximately 7,000 plant species (almost as many as Linnaeus himself). Printed cloth. Written by the Serbian geologist Marinko Oluic (b. 1935). The text is in cyclostat. It includes a leaf stating that it was presented as a thesis at the Humboldt University in (former East) Berlin, on 16 November 1973. With a stamp "Nur in der DDR verleihbar". Most probably a rather rare, printed in very few copies. Library stamp on title page, otherwise very good, clean.
