Full page plates and many vignette illustrations throughout the text. Not dated, 1878 First edition, First impression, with edges stained yellow, "End of Contents" on page 14 and the three illustrations on pages 21, 35 and 63 which were omitted in later editions. Cover has light rubbing and a little bit of edge wear near the spine. Dark blue endpapers; tape stain on ffep also shows on it's verso; ownership book plate on rear paste-down. Neat ownership signature on half-title. Rear hinge has a couple splits, but book is nice and solid. Interior very nice.

Light tape stains on right margin and mild mat burn. "Ruth Chrisman Gannett is best known perhaps as the illustrator of John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flats and the children's book My Father's Dragon, written by her stepdaughter Ruth Stiles Gannett Kahn. Ruth Chrisman Gannett created a number of fine lithographs in the 1930's -50's, but specific information on dates and edition sizes is scant as she usually only signed her prints in pencil with no indication of title, date or edition size."-marcchabot.

Carl Joseph Bauer (1897 - 1989) was active/lived in Germany. He produced architectural scenes, landscapes and animal but he is best remembered for his Art Deco etchings and drypoints of women. During the 1920's he even etched the portraits of such Hollywood luminaries as Greta Garbo and Norma Shearer.
