Description:
While working at a children's camp in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Jane Shaw Ward began telling whimsical and fantastical tales about a creature known as a Tajar, a combination of a tiger, jaguar, and badger. The tales proved so popular, that she ultimately wrote them down, and the first volume of Tajar Tales was published while she was working as a social worker with the YWCA in China in 1921. A version illustrated by H.L. Drucklieb was published in 1925, of which this is the 1947 revised edition. The various stories recount the Tajar's encounters with a forest ranger and a witch, as well as how he learned to swim and the various adventures he encountered along the way, accompanied by wonderful line drawings that perfectly capture the mischievous whimsy of this fantastical creature.
This copy is Good condition with a dust jacket in poor condition. There is some damage to the top of the spine of the book, and one of the front pages has a large gold and black sticker from the Girl Guides of Canada,… Read More

Description:
A fascinating primary source document reflecting the fraught question of alcohol and prohibition in late nineteenth century Canada. Presented as an attempt to reconcile the various extreme positions related to the temperance question at the time, the author, R.A.H. Morrow writing under the pseudonym Ishmael, seeks to present a plain-spoken overview of the history of alcohol use and abuse, temperance, and the current state of the question, inspired by the release of the Canada Temperance Act (Permissive Bill) of 1878, of which he provides a synopsis in an appendix. A fascinating, firsthand social history.
This copy may be graded as Fair, having extensive staining to the cloth covering the front board, as well front and back boards being warped, both likely the result of water damage. There is also discolouration and wear in general to the front and back boards and bumping to the corners. Despite this, the text inside is entirely legible, and this example would provide the enthusiast of Canadian history… Read More

Description:
Catherine Ahearn (b. 1949) is a bilingual Canadian writer of poetry, prose, and essays, amongst other artistic endeavours. She was the first poet laureate of Ottawa from 1982 to 19984.
Thus Spoke Superman was her fourth collection of poetry, published in 1980 and is partly inspired by Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, dealing with many of the themes which he treated in that work. As per the description on the back of Ahearn's work, "It is in updating and expanding, in poetic form, some of Nietzsche's theories as well as in bringing into play her personal mythology that Thus Spoke Superman succeeds in creating a work of art that is both individualistic and profoundly lyrical."
This volume is in fair condition. There is much wear and discolouration to the covers and a small tear likely from a previous price sticker. A name and date that was written on the cover page in pen has been drawn over with black marker which is visible on the other side of the page. There is also an old price in pencil.… Read More
