Description:
Amsterdam, without date and printer (about 1740). 18 leaves (including title). Oblong 4to. Bound in marbled paper. Despite a clumsy attempt of calligraphy on the verso of the second leaf a fine copy. Third issue of the third book of Ambrosius Perling. This master calligrapher was born in Utrecht in 1657 or 1658 and became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1683. He kept a boarding school where calligraphy was taught and died in 1718. The first issues of the books written by Perling were published at his own expenses, the later ones were published (as in this case) by members of the family De Broen, engravers and publishers in Amsterdam. Ambrosius Perling reached a high fame during his lifetime as the last writing master who could hold in honor the calligraphic tradition of the Dutch republic. De Broen advertised his scripts as produced by "the jewel of the writing masters" and in fact the fame of Perling as unsurpassed calligrapher lasted well into the XIX century, both in Holland and abroad. 1707. Vesantione [i.e. Besançon], 1707. Titlepage, 14,(viii),441,(xliii)pp. 16mo. Contemporary full calf, spine goldtooled. Corners rubbed. First flyleaf loosening, browned throughout and (water)stain on last flyleaf. François-Joseph de Grammont was Archbishop of Besançon from 1698 to 1717. The present work contains the statutes of the diocesan synod convoced by him in his capacity as Archbishop. At a synod the decrees determined upon by the (arch)bishop are promulgated and a period of two months is allowed for having recourse against them to the bishop or the Holy See. All the clergy and laity of the diocese are bound by these decrees, and it is not necessary for the bishop to send his statutes to Rome for revision before publication. Pages 336 to 348 specifically deal with books and in the "mandemant" in the introductory material the archbishop explains why he forbids certain books in his diocese. He states: "Nous avons apris avec douleur que des Villes… Read More

The 28 cards contain the 26 letters of the alphabet and two card for the numbers (0 - 9).A lovely and extremely rare set of cards. The letters are printed in relief in gold. The whole card and the illustrations have a border in that is also printed in relief in gold with the same decorative points. The back of the card has a text in rhyme that explains the illustration. There is no mention of a publisher of an editor. We have not found any reference to this alphabet, not in Gumuchian nor in another bibliography. It seems to be extremely rare.

Description:
Nine sheets have the imprint: London, H. Such; one says London, printed at the 'Catnach Press' by W.S. Fortey and two without imprint. All sheets printed on very fragile and thin paper of different colours. (some fraying). Size c. 19 x 25 cm. Printed on the recto only. Many with woodcut illustrations. They mostly contain two or three songs in two columns, many with a decorative border down the middle. Many contain a series number.Broadside ballads provided lyrics to popular songs, and were sold cheaply on individual sheets of paper. Decorated with crude woodcuts and often plagued by careless typesetting they were cheap products sold for a penny or even halfpenny a sheet. While the lyrics were often new, the tunes would have been familiar to all. As a widely circulating form of popular literature, ballads can be a useful resource for the study of the history of literacy and can also be of interest to those studying the history of printing. Ballads traditionally addressed themes from everyday… Read More

No place, no date, but all French, late 18th, early 19th century. Size mostly c. 30 x 45 cm. (uncut, edges a bit dustsoiled, a few traces of folds and some marginal tears but generally in a good condition).
Calligraphy manuals could be bought as complete works but it was also possible to buy the plates separately and thus assemble a personal collection of samples of writing. These plates were obviously collected as such. They were never bound. For some plates we can find out in which works they were included, for others we cannot. A few of the plates show the postures recommended for writing; most of the other plates are phrases to copy and examples of writing. Some titles of the plates: "taille et tenue de la plume", "situation du corps", "table de Pithagore". We find names of engravers: "Huet et Baublé fils, Ellis d'Avignon, Bourgoin engraved Bariolle, Dizambourg, Vorms d'Avignon, Lechard, Boulanger engraved by Pelicier, De Milns, De Fresse. Plates mostly printed by Basset, some by Langlumé and… Read More

Some small touches of colour in the decoration. In an elaborate oval border the word "Japon" is written with a short text on Japan. A charming piece of mid-nineteenth century calligraphy. The text translates as: "The Japanese seem to descend from a Chinese colony but they are more civilised and have more experience in the arts. The peoples have nearly always enjoyed a profound peace; they never admit foreigners into their country. Only the Dutch are being received in Nagasaki, once a year. In 1618 there were over four hundred thousand Christians: but the most awful persecution killed nearly all of them and during 30 years iron and fire was used against them".
