An association copy, inscribed on the title page to a longtime colleague: "For Bill Becker, whose loyalty and support sustained over many years. With admiration and esteem, Linda Lear, Sept. 29, 1997." Uncommon signed. William H. Becker was a a fellow professor of history at George Washington University, where Linda Lear earned her PhD in history in 1974 and then returned to the faculty in 1978. They were members of history department together for decades. Becker mainly wrote about the history of business and economics. Lear's book is the definitive biography of Rachel Carson, and it received the Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize from the History of Science Society. She has continued to write about Carson and has become the foremost steward and champion of her legacy. A fine book in a very good jacket on account of a crease to top of front flap and a quarter inch tear to top corner at flap fold.

Association copy, inscribed to fellow poet Leslie Scalapino who, as founder and editor of O Books (in Oakland), published McClures Plum Stones: Cartoons of No Heaven in 2002. Scalapino was considered a language poet, but felt her closest ties were to the Beats. The inscription reads: "Aug 14, 2001, For Leslie, 'Stars are born / on high cliffs / in Nebulae.' {pg. 49} xx grahhr, Michael." His usual sort of growl-kiss. Scalapino wrote of McClures work, "He transposes (enacts) the (comic book bubble) language of his poetry theater; it is a mode of theater in both his poetry and his plays in both, the distinction between surface and intuitive apprehension is broken down or between that which is visual and (that as) language." Sixth printing. Uncommon signed in this paperback edition. Bruce Berlind was an old friend of Merwin's, as they graduated from Princeton within a year of each other and both studied with John Berryman there. Berlind was a longtime English professor at Colgate and ran its visiting writer series. There's a good story about how Merwin and Hayden Carruth dined and drank wine together at Berlind's house while Carruth played hooky from the National Book Award ceremony. All hungover, Berlind and Merwin drove over to Carruth's place the next morning to tell him he had in fact won the award.

Signed on the title page by this noted science writer and physicist, a Chancellor Professor of Physics at the College of William and Mary. Near fine book with bumped corners, in a very good jacket because of a two tears, both about a half-inch, one along lower spine at front, the other at top rear along the flap. Uncommon or scarce signed.

Not signed, but from the library of famed novelist and bookman Larry McMurtry, with his bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Only published in the UK, this collection gathers Snyder's early work: Riprap, Myths & Texts, his Cold Mountain translations, and The Back Country (before it was separately published). With illustrations by Beat artist and Snyder's longtime friend Will Peterson. A very near fine book in a very good, price-clipped jacket with some creasing to top edge (because the jacket is a little bigger than the book)  and a chip and short tear at top of spine. A nice association .

A large heavy book, quarto, 700 pages, one of 200 privately printed copies. Red and white Chinese characters and lettering on black boards. No jacket as issued. A nice inscription considering Klay is a Marine Corps veteran and the Corps is the subject of this debut collection, which deservingly won the National Book Award.
