Book is near mint condition, as is the light tan dust jacket. Picture shows the darkened cellophane covering (except for top left corner), but this is easily removed to reveal lovely dust jacket and blue binding below that. Two-color print job, with decorations.

This stunning presentation of Coleridge's Ancient Mariner is marked with unusual and evocative engravings by artist Paul McPharlin. The art is imaginative blue, while the text is two-color--black and red. This limited edition (one of 1450 copies printed) is so unusual and so little known. The cream linen boards are darkened on the spine edge the the spine also darkened from light exposure, but the impressed art on the cover is fine. The interior is unmarked, clean and bright. the box is faded on edges and somewhat worn, with a tear on 1/4th of the bottom but otherwise good.

An example of fine printing at its best, this oversize volume features 10 engravings on copper by noted artist David Jones. Rough-cut pages, with marbled slipcase. This is #85 of 200 copies, 180 of which were for sale and 20 for presentation. Includes the prospectus for the book and an essay on the making of a book by Paul Standard. Also with New York Times obituary for David Jones, which mentions the book.

Remarkable, well-known presentation.The binding is loose (see picture) and some beginning pages are loose but most of the book's signatures are tight, sewn. Easy repair. Front and back boards are very good, spine is darkened from exposure to light.

This novel of the 1920s is, according to the author, expurgated ("owing to censorship, which has a vogue in America as indiscriminate as all such enforcements of law must be...") So, there are asterisks marking where "sense, continuity, and beauty have been damaged." This, written in the foreword by Djuna Barnes in Paris, August 8, 1927. This book has nonetheless truly lovely illusttations by Barnes, which are another aspect of her talent. This is the first edition of the book, limited to 3000 copies. Condition is very good, tight and unmarked. The front cover has a few spots of white, the spine is discolored, and the tip of the spine has a slight tear.
