Wight was regarded as a highly innovative and efficient tenant farmer on the Cockburn estate at Ormiston. At the instigation of Henry Home, Lord Kames, he was appointed in 1773 to survey the corn farms under the control of the commissioners to manage the annexed estates. Wight undertook two surveys of the estates in July and August 1773 and 1774. The commissioners were so pleased with the results that they subsequently engaged Wight on an annual basis to undertake general surveys of Scotland for the purpose of both recording and disseminating good farming practice.
