Description:
New York/London: The American-Scandinavian Foundation/Oxford University Press, 1919. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. First American edition, and first edition in English, of Jacobsen's great novel, his second. xi, 284, [3, ads, 1, blank]. Maroon cloth with gilt seal on front board, lettered in gilt on the spine. Top edge gilt. Spine a bit darkened, small nick on top edge of rear board, but overall, a clean tight copy of an uncommon book. In "Letters to a Young Poet" Rilke wrote to his young correspondent Franz Xaver Kappus, "Now Niels Lyhne will open to you, a book of splendors and depths; the more often one reads it, the more everything seems to be contained within it, from life's most imperceptible fragrances to the full, enormous taste of its heaviest fruits. In it there is nothing that does not seem to have been understood, held, lived, and known in memory's wavering echo.... You will experience the great happiness of reading this book for the first time, and will move through…

[52] pp. Sewn wrappers, with a roughly trimmed translucent outer wrapper and gray paper inner wrapper, with a gold leaf rectangle hand painted on the inner wrapper. Some minor wear, near fine. Inscribed by Drescher on the title-page and dated 1986. In the Design Observer, Steven Heller wrote of Drescher's small handmade books, "like a kind of automatic writing, the books are not always intentional but rather 'a nervous habit... packaged Tourette's blabber.' He adds they are 'they are books not paintings or sculptures because they are necessary and function as file cabinets of the imagination.'" Two copies in OCLC.

Description:
[Los Angeles]: Edward Ruscha, 1969. First edition. [64] pp. Printed wrappers with original glassine. Glassine a little toned with small chip at the head of the spine; book fine. 2400 copies were printed of this first edition, a second edition was published in 1976. Phillpot notes, "Nine Swimming Pools is one of Ruscha's strangest in terms of one's expectations of a book. Most of the pages are blank. And then there is the punch line, the broken drinking glass. This surprising non sequitur drags one into the depths of these true blue pools, which were mostly photographed around Las Vegas, to question the apparently idyllic scenes." Engberg & Phillpot B8.
