Dated Jan. 13, 1989, on Bowers & Merena letterhead. With handwritten annotations by both Hodder and Ford. Folded, fine. A typewritten (computer printout) draft of Hodderís important article, published in the first volume of the Second Series of the American Journal of Numismatics, along with a cover letter to Ford. Hodderís article is an exceptional work exploring the ways in which complex die marriages came about during the striking of New Jersey coppers.

Spine worn with backstrip partly lacking; very good or so, but with bright unspotted pages. Originally published in 1850, New Varieties "was designed as a convenient and authentic manual for individuals or institutions dealing in the precious metals, and especially those engaged in the California trade, then newly opened." Original register volume used to record transactions for 1850 for the grocery firm of Schroder, Schulte & Co., San Francisco, which has been converted into a scrapbook for newspaper clippings shortly thereafter. 8vo, original brown calf-backed mottled boards. Approximately 200 pages, with all but 10 having neatly cut newspaper clippings pasted over the original handwritten accounting register. Entire leaf from an 1854 issue of the San Francisco Extra Herald laid in. Some discoloration from adhesive used throughout, but legible and very good overall. A most interesting volume. The preserved title page is neatly inscribed "Day Book for Schroder Schulte & Co San Francisco" in black ink faded a bit to brown. The entire volume would appear to have been used for its original purpose, though nearly every page has subsequently been pressed into service as backing for a newspaper clipping album. Near fine. An unusual and rather scarce work, with well-printed illustrations in the section highlighted in the title. The volume reproduces a manuscript covering a variety of matters relating to coinage, much of it written in 16th-century French; the final pages provide the titular work, and are most remarkable for their illustrations, which are mounted (the pages being printed on one side only to better accommodate the wrinkling caused by the drying adhesive). The illustrations were the work of Mr. Edwin Wilson. Manville 527 (where he discusses the work in some detail).

An early house organ focusing on numismatic literature, this monthly publication proved to be ahead of its time, and the final (double) issue includes a letter explaining that it was being suspended indefinitely as it had proven to be financially unsustainable.
