All pieces loosely contained in contemporary wooden box with a sliding lid with manuscript title "Utrecht" on top. A very early example of this kind of game, and hard to find complete and in very good overall condition.

First published translation of the 'Book of Documents' (Shu-ching), and also the first of the 'Five Classics' on Confucianism to be translated into an European language. The basis for the translation was a manuscript which had been sent from Peking by Antoine Gaubil (1689-1759). Splendid colour maps drawn at scale 1:40,000 by Viollet-le-Duc. For eight years between 1868 and 1876, he used his summer vacation to study and measure Mont Blanc, the greatest of European mountains. His first aim was the preparation of a complete and systematic map of the region under survey – a goal he achieved spectacularly with the production of a huge and stunning chromolithographic plan 'view' of the massif 'as if it had been photographed from an altitude of 10'000 meters'.
