When the War of 1812 began, Kentucky had a total population of only 400,000, and out of this total furnished 40 regiments of volunteer militia, as well as a number of battalions and companies -i.e., more than 25,000 men between 1812-1815. Of the 1,876 Americans killed during the war, some 1,200 or about 64% were Kentuckians. The military records of Kentuckians who did serve in the War of 1812 are incomplete and scattered, and the rosters preserved in this volume represent those extant and available to the Adj. General in 1890/1, and since few lists have been discovered since this original report, this volume must stand as the primary source for data on soldiers from Kentucky in that war.
