London: Privately Printed [Bernard Quaritch], 1880. FIRST EDITION, First Issue. 270 x 205 mm. (10 5/8 x 8 1/8"). 2 p.l., 33 pp.Translated and Annotated by his Friend and Pupil, F. B. ORIGINAL PRINTED YELLOW WRAPPERS, veryexpertly rebacked. In a (slightly worn) plush-lined navy blue Roan-backed buckram clamshell box, gilt lettering on back. Penzer, pp. 97-98. ◆Wrappers just lightly soiled, gutter open at quire E, but a really excellent copy, the volume entirely firm, and text clean and fresh. This is a very desirable copy in the original fragile wrappers of the uncommon first issue of the work DNB considers "by far [Burton's] most notable poetic effort." Explorer and author Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-90) is primarily known for his riveting accounts of travel--often in regions never before visited by a European--and for his masterful translations of Eastern classics, most notably "The Arabian Nights." A remarkable linguist, he was fluent in more than 40 languages and dialects.…

New York: New Directions, 1954. No. 15 OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 248 x 152 mm. (9 3/4 x 6"). 242 pp. (cancel title page tipped-in, as in all copies). Publisher's linen-backed patterned paper boards, flat spine with author's name in gilt. In original blue cardboard slipcase with paper title label on front cover. Crandell A13.I.b. ◆One small, only vaguely visible discolored spot at head of spine, otherwise a mint copy, with leaves that open only reluctantly. This is one of a relatively small number of surviving copies of this limited edition, which Williams had privately printed when publishers balked at the explicit sexual content of the short stories. How many copies exist is a matter of dispute: according to Andreas Brown of the Gotham Book Market, about 80 of the 100 copies were destroyed in storage; however, Crandell indicates that as many as 136 copies may have been issued, with the extra copies available for the author's private use, but that perhaps all but about 10 numbered…

Kingfisher with seven in-text illustrations, and "Lyrics" with ink gift inscription on title to Esther Seebohm SIGNED BY ASHBEE and dated October 1938. ◆Kingfisher: vellum a little spotty and with a scratch on the lower side, paper slightly browned at top of upper board, occasional light scattered foxing, toning to first and last leaf; "Lyrics": vellum somewhat soiled, covers slightly rubbed and edges worn through to boards, but the contents in excellent condition. On the whole very good copies with mostly minor condition issues. Written by Essex House Press founder C. R. Ashbee, these two works were inspired by the author's time in Egypt during the…
