DW is not price clipped and has a cover image by the artist Damien Hirst who was a friend of the late author. No inscriptions or annotations. "Grotesque but brilliant study of Fred West and his even more repulsive wife. Between them they raped, tortured and murdered a still unknown number of people. It cannot avoid being a dreadful tale because of its subject, but it is also this very fine writer's best book." Interest in the book has been newly awakened by the powerful dramatisation on television, 'Appropriate Adult', with Dominic West and Emily Watson both of whom received BAFTA awards for their performances. "Burn gained unprecedented access to case files and West family histories to weave the back stories of the murderers, the murdered and the survivors into a flawlessly crafted and non-judgmental book that once read is never forgotten." .

Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1975 9780140039320. First paperback edition of this autobiographical account of the childhood, youth and early adult life of the legendary 'hard man' of British mountaineering. This is a well-thumbed copy with creasing and damage to the spine but no inscriptions or annotations. In some ways this oft read copy endears the book to me! 256 pages including index. Memoirs of a famous climber who led the resurgence of British rock-climbing in the 1950s, often in partnership with Don Whillans, pioneering many new climbs of exceptional severity. He also made some notable ascents in the Alps and the Himalayas. This is, however, a book which should be of interest to more than just the mountaineering community. As a fellow working-class resident of Greater Manchester, I found his account of the city and its Pennine backcloth in the years of WWII and its aftermath to be authentic enough to stir many memories. .

Winner of the Orwell Prize for Political Writing, Peter Hennessy's Having it So Good: Britain in the Fifties captures Britain in an extraordinary decade, emerging from the shadow of war into growing affluence. The 1950s was the decade in which Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile, Bill Haley released 'Rock Around the Clock', rationing ended and Britain embarked on the traumatic, disastrous Suez War. In this highly enjoyable, original book, Peter Hennessy takes his readers into front rooms, classrooms, cabinet rooms and the new high-street coffee bars of Britain to recapture, as no previous history has, the feel, the flavour and the politics of this extraordinary time of change.
