The Game of the Owl is a simple gambling game in which the players pay to or take stakes from a pool according to the throw of three normal (six-sided) dice. In Italy, the currently assumed country of origin, it is known by the name Pela il Chiù, meaning 'pluck the owl': the owl being regarded as proverbially stupid in that country, an element of cheating the unwary is perhaps implied. In other countries, the name is neutral: Le Jeu de la Chouette in France, Das Eulenspiel in Germany, Het Uilenbord (or Uilenspel) in the Netherlands.
