Illustrated by Irving Block. The "first book edition and first illustrated edition" of George Silverman's Explanation (1868), the last work of fiction completed by Charles Dickens. Designed and printed by Bonnie Thompson Norman and Patrick Reagh. Letterpress printed in Baskerville on Mohawk Superfine. Some rubbing to spine gilt, else fine. One of 26 lettered copies, of a total edition of 326 copies. Signed by Block and Stone at the colophon, as issued, with an additional inscription from Patrick Reagh, the printer. Further inscribed by Stone on a preliminary leaf. Prospectus laid in.

Minor spotting to top edge, ghost of paper clip indentation to top of the front panel of the jacket. Small indentation to first several leaves. Overall very bright and clean. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from Dutton editor Hal Scharlatt on Dutton letterhead presenting the book to Ken Millar (aka Ross MacDonald).Carpenter's uncommon third novel, not reprinted except for a Pocket Books paperback the following year. With a blurb by Richard Brautigan, one of Carpenter's closest friends: "In microscopically-accurate detail Getting Off searches through the emotional odds and ends of an American marriage that has just turned into a pile of junk. This is a very brave book about love.

Paris: Éditions Totem/Librairie José Corti, 1932. First edition. 232 pp. Original publisher's printed wrappers. Minor handling wear, yapped edges a little rubbed. Very clean overall. A play by the great Chilean poet. Gilles de Rais was the notorious knight who fought alongside Joan of Arc but is better known as a serial killer; Bataille and Huysmans both wrote works about him. Frontispiece portrait of the author by Picasso, with two illustrations by Joseph Sima. Inscribed by Huidobro "a mes chers amis Lipchitz," possibly the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and his wife Berthe, with whom Huidobro was known to associate during his time in Paris. A rare book, particularly inscribed.

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1960. 323 pp. Perfect-bound publisher's printed wrappers. Spine creased, lower front corner bumped. Kearney describes this "original and complete unabridged" edition as a "cheaply produced 'popular' edition." The butterfly mosiac cover design is exclusive to this edition. Kearney 5.7.3.

Paris: Editions Narcisse, 1928. First edition. [96] pp. Printed wrappers with French flaps. Some toning to extremities, spine a little browned. One of 200 numbered copies printed by Roger Lescaret for Harry and Caresse Crosby. Raised in Wyoming, Gerard Vernon Wallop, 9th Earl of Portsmouth, Viscount Lymington, fell in with the Crosbys in Paris; they "bowled him right over" and he enjoyed various decadences with them, taking a flat nearby at 1 Rue Gît-le-Coeur. This copy is inscribed "for Constance, with Gerard's love, January 4th 1929" with an Autograph Letter Signed laid in from Gerard to Constance. Constance was Constance Crowninshield Coolidge, the Comtesse de Jumilhac, Harry Crosby's "Lady of the Golden Horse," and the closest of his mistresses (Caresse noted years later, "All through the Paris years she was my most formidable antagonist, but I could not help immensely admiring her.") A collection of poems published posthumously and anonymously by the author's husband, the Australian writer Arthur Maquarie. Mary Lintner was a sculptor and printmaker, and as alluded to in Maquarie's anonymous introduction, was the daughter of Joseph Lintner, a scientist and professor who was the first to hold the post of New York State Entomologist, and who had died in Rome in 1898. An image of her portrait bust of her father is on p. [5]. Two issues of this excellent Midwestern journal, of a total of fourteen published, edited by John Fowler, with George Kimball and Charles Plymell. Number 9 includes very early work by S. Clay Wilson (here "Steve"), along with Bukowski, levy, Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan, Ginsberg, Silliman, Eigner, and others, not to mention the Grist Playmate of the Month, Gerard Malanga. Number 12 includes work by Berrigan, Padgett, Mac Low, Hollo, and Hannah Weiner, along with a double-page center spread by Wilson. Both issues near fine, number 9 with some staple holes on the fore-edge through the first two sheets, and mailing label addressed to Glen Todd (fellow Wichita poet and friend of Plymell) on the lower front cover. Text reads, "the youth made the revolution & the youth will keep it, / & youth will go on making the revolution / throughout Latin America... / & the world!" Image is of several soldiers/guerrilla fighters. A copy is listed alongside other Van Newkirk/Guerrilla material in the Labadie Collection at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, hence the attribution. Another copy in the All of Us or None Archive at the Oakland Museum of California Art. Some wear, tape ghosts to verso, small pinholes in upper corners.
