Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons Ltd., 1929.. First edition. Octavo. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. 316pp. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with just a touch of bumping to the top corners. The contents with a previous owner's small ink inscription to the front free endpaper and some scattered foxing to the edges of the textblock are otherwise in very good order throughout. Complete with the original very good unclipped dustwrapper which has a minor closed tear to the spine panel (with a neat old paper repair verso) and some minor neat old paper repairs to the verso at the head and foot of the spine panel and joints. An account of the author's experiences as a judge in India during the British Raj. The work includes chapters on criminal procedure, murder, assassination, human sacrifice, the blood-feud, women, husbands and children, and poisons. It is, however, "much more than a mere chronicle of… Read More
