Signed by Bruno Walter on the title page (as pictured). The signature is protected with tape. Also includes two signed notes from Walter, one attached to the inside front cover and the other to the inside back cover. The first owner of the book was Katharine Foote Raffy, the daughter of Boston composer Arthur Foote. No dust jacket. Boards are lightly worn at the edges.

The original plain d/j has a piece out of the top of the spine, (intentionally done) so that the title may be read, and the original box has very light wear. Printed at the Riverside Press and edited by John Albree with a lovely frontis photo in gravure of a young Whittier and limited to 189 copies designed by (?) Bruce Rogers. (It looks like a duck)

Neat bookplate, some light rubbing, but a fine copy with the half-title and publisher's advertisements. Whittier first book to be published by William D. Ticknor. Reviewed and praised by William Cullen Bryant in the Evening Post on June 2,1843, "Whittier's verses, we think grow better and better. With no abatement of poetic enthusiasm, his style becomes more manly, and his vein of thought richer and richer".
