Some shelf wear with slightly bumped corners and light edgewear, but binding is tight and the pages are all clean with no markings. The edges of the textblock are lightly tanned. The spine has a slight tilt. Some spotting and tanning evident on the pale gray cloth boards but the paste on pictorial on the front cover is clean and the colors are bright. Some rubbing on the black background of the spine but gilt lettering is still intact and clear. The text inside only takes up the 41 numbered pages. The rest of the book is taken up with the 192 plates of illustrations, 32 of which are in full color.

Some shelf wear with slightly bumped corners and light edgewear, but binding is tight and the pages are slightly tanned on the edges but all clean and bright with no markings inside except for previous owner's name stamped inside front cover, back cover and on title page with handwritten date it was acquired. Dust jacket has a 1/4 inch tear at either end of the spine and rubbing along all edges. It is price clipped but there is little fading and the primary color on the cover of yellow is still bright. The spine strip has light blue cloth with green lettering and small yellow dots on either side of the title. The boards have vertical, pastel stripes in light blue, yellow and green. The spine is broken inside the front endpapers but before the title page however the binding is still tight throughout with no loose pages. Back of the DJ is lightly tanned as well as the edges of the textblock but the binding is tight and the pages are clean.

Jacobi Gronovil, 1721. Hardcover. Fair. Bound in calf-skin vellum-- spine has 6 ridges with the words TACITUS Curante GRONOVIO (clearly done with quill and ink). It appears some text has worn away below this. The leather binding is an ivory color, more discolored along the spine, where it has begun to wear away at 2 of the ridges. Front and back are embossed with floral diamond design-- shows signs of shelfwear but nothing the sturdy vellum wouldn't handle. The binding is tight. Outer edges of pages very brown with age, dust and sun. Based on other book descriptions, I believe this is volume one of a two volume set. There's some foxing throughout the book, and yellowing around the edges of pages, as would be expected of a book this age. Paper is thicker than paper of later books, and you can see that each letter in the text was arranged by a typesetter.
