Description:
The leaf is from the Lumen Animae (Light of the Soul), a curious encyclopaedia compiled about 1300 by Berengarius de Landora (see Notes). It gathers together quotations on relevant themes from authors as diverse as Aristotle, Theophrastus, the elder Pliny, Ptolemy, Solinus, Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, Isidore, Hugh of St Victor, and Avicenna to form a handbook of medieval knowledge of all sorts. It contains chapters on medicine & natural sciences, the human constitution, psychic and abnormal states of the mind, the choice of food, prescriptions for physicians, animals, herbs, minerals, etc. Berengarius' intention was to provide material for illustrative sermons by preachers, to explain the natural and moral world in terms of the all-pervading nature of God. It was immensely popular in the 15th century as a reference work, a late medieval bestseller.
Verso: 43 lines of text in Latin printed in two columns on laid rag paper in two sizes of a Gothic typeface. Headings, capital letters and paragraph… Read More

Description:
A "Passion Play" or "Passion Narrative" is a religious drama of medieval origin that is read on Palm Sunday and in Holy Week. It refers to the accounts given in the canonical gospels of the suffering and death of Jesus.
The readings are distinguished not only by their length and solemnity but also by being read by a group of people, each taking one or more 'parts' in the style of a dramatic reading.

The reading here is by the deacon and the priest and the roles are denoted by a cross for the priest and an 'M' (probably for "minister") for the deacon.
The deacon performed the role of the narrator, while the priest played Christ, which explains why the part is identified by a cross though sometimes this is indicated by 'S', for sacerdos, (priest).

Description:Single folio on vellum. The substrate reveals a spotted goat. Double column, 30 lines, very lightly ruled in diluted ink. Unfoliated. Alternating red and blue initials with contrasting penwork. A couple of corrections in the margins.… Read More
